ANNOUNCING…..Our New Retreat-in-a-Bag Website!

Announcing the new and improved Retreat-In-A-Bagwebsite.  For our subscribers, go take a look at www.retreatinabag.net.

For the two-and -a-half years we have been in existence, we have been primarily a blog site, with the goal of encouraging women’s ministry leaders, particularly those in small churches.  Our long-term goal was always to share our resources, accomplished at first through our Retreat-in-a-Bag book series.  But we have a lot of “homegrown” resources that we want to share as free downloads, and we are finally at a place where this is possible.  While our blogs are still a vital part of our website, now we are achieving our original goal of making resources–skits, quiet time studies, graphics and forms–available for download.  Check it out!  We will be adding to these downloadable resources as quickly as possible.  We are so excited to share these with you!  As you explore the new website, we would greatly appreciate your input and comments.  If you find a use for our resources, we would love your feedback.

It is beyond the scope of our vision for this website to include recipes, craft ideas and so many other things that are helpful to women’s ministries.  That is why we are posting links to direct you to some of the more helpful women’s ministry websites.

Get Your FREE Christian Skit!

Today, as promised, we have a thank-you gift for our subscribers–a free skit, delivered as a .pdf document to your email!  We’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, as we want to encourage even small women’s ministries to use Christian skits.  The themed retreat skits found in our Retreat-in-a-Bag Series are longer and more involved.  But this is a sample of a short, fun, easy to produce skit that has a meaningful message.  If you have ever looked online, you know that it is hard to find skits like this, particularly without copyright restrictions.

How Do I Get the FREE Skit?

It’s simple! All you have to do to receive a free skit in your inbox is to enter your email address below in order to subscribe to the Retreat-in-a-Bag website. We will attach the skit (in pdf format) once you confirm your address!  (Current subscribers, just send us an email)

Don’t Miss the FREE Skit!

This free skit is the first of a series of skits that will soon be made available on this website.  The series is “Bubba and Junior on the Road to Eternal Life.”   We used it in a summer study we titled “Road Trip,” and each week we had a teaching geared to a particular road sign.  “U-Turn Allowed” focuses on repentance.  Because of the cross of Jesus Christ, Christians are on the road to eternal life; when temptations come and they momentarily lose their way, God has made an easy way for us to get back on track, and it is found in I John 1:9.  He asks that we repent, and then He promises to forgive and cleanse us.  This skit puts that lesson in an entertaining and visual format.  You have our copy and use it freely.

Other skits in this series will be made available on this website soon – and if you subscribe you’ll hear about it the minute they are available.  Don’t miss it!  If you haven’t done it already, subscribe now.

Retreat-in-a-Bag Series (The Beginning)

Three books are currently available in our “Retreat-in-a-Bag” series:  “We are the Fragrance of Christ,” Steadfast and Immovable,” and “Disciplesheep–Putting Off  Your Wolf-Like Tendencies.”   Each represents a theme that we have used for a women’s retreat, and contains reproducible artwork, a quiet time study, and skit(s) related to the theme.  The books provide direction for carrying out the theme through decorations and remembrances, as well as general guidance for putting on a women’s retreat.

But the dream was birthed over five years ago with a desire to make skits that had been written for our women’s retreats available to other churches.  On occasion, we had been asked for copies of the scripts.  So we began a journey to learn the process of putting the scripts into a publishable format.  In the midst of that process, we realized that while the skits on their own would be helpful, possibly more guidance regarding the development of the theme throughout a retreat or event would be even more helpful.  Perhaps other small churches could benefit from resources that we had the ability to make available.  That is how the idea of putting a full retreat theme and resources all in one package developed–and thus the name “Retreat-in-a-Bag.”

Searching for Graphics

Okay, so you don’t have a resident graphic artist to do all of your artwork.  Where do you go?  You cannot just copy any graphic that you find, because there are copyright laws prohibiting that sort of thing.

One option to consider is searching a royalty-free internet site like “Bigstock.com“.  We recently had a “women in ministry” conference, which we called “Side by Side.”  We found an adorable picture of three girls walking on a beach, hand in hand.  It perfectly depicted the message of the conference, namely that women’s ministry is not a one-woman show.  We need each other as we serve side by side together.  Since the girls were walking on a beach, the event decorations revolved around a beach theme.

Bigstock.com and other similar sites usually have a fee to download the graphic, and a few rules that come with usage.  These differ from site to site.  The prices can range from free to $9 or higher.  Some sites are ones where you join and for one fee you can download a certain number of graphics.  You can “lightbox” or “download” the images.  When you go this route, you do not need to worry about copyright info and giving credit.  When we purchased the photo of the girls, we paid once and used it multiple times.  One restriction limited the size of reproduction–we were not allowed to make a poster-sized copy of the image.  Of course, we were not allowed to send it to someone else electronically to be used for a different event.  None of the images are sold or used to make a profit.  They are strictly used to enhance our theme.

If you go this route, please make sure you carefully read the rules of the site you choose.

Promise Verses

Each book in the Retreat-In-A-Bag series contains two listings of promise verses in its Appendix.  There is a list of the verses we have selected, each verse written out in its entirety; then there is a separate page listing the references (verse “addresses”) only.

At every women’s retreat, we give each women her own promise verse for the retreat.  They are “randomly” given out, but we always pray that God will make sure that each woman gets the promise that will be meaningful to her.  Our ladies look forward to finding out their promise verse every year.  Often, the promise verse is noted on their retreat name tag, so that as soon as they arrive at the retreat and pick up their booklet and name tag, they can look up their promise verse.

So why would the Appendix mentioned above be handy?  Yes, it is easy enough to compile a list of promise verses on your own.  In fact, we did that ourselves each year for many years.  However, we found that many of the same general promise verses were used from year to year (with the exception of promises specially selected to relate to the retreat theme).  Each time a list was compiled, there was a process of checking and re-checking so that there were no errors when the references were copied onto the name tags.  By using our list of verse references, the process is streamlined and we don’t worry about copying errors.
