Numbers Aren’t Everything!

We just had our first women’s event of the new year.  Some say it was scheduled a little too close to the holidays.  I don’t know if that was true–we scheduled it early in the year in order to “start the new year off” with a special time of ministry.  We had planned a lovely “mug and muffin brunch” with a guest speaker.  But sign-ups were low.  Perhaps it was too close to December and all of the busyness and traveling associated with the holidays.  Maybe we missed some opportunities to promote the event, but we made up for that with personal invitations by mouth and via email. Nevertheless, attendance was less than two-thirds that of a similar event held in August.

We prayed diligently for the event and those attending, we had bulletin announcements and talked about the event with those we ran into at church.  Perhaps we could have done more.  As women’s ministry leaders, we will discuss what could have been done differently. But you know what?  In the end, those who were meant to be there were there.  After you have done all you know to do, you need to leave the results up to God.  This is true in our own lives, but also true in ministry.

Our event was a huge blessing to those who attended, and God moved among us in a very special way.  Numbers aren’t everything!

Christmas Lights

Christmas colorful lights on wooden table

Season’s Greetings, Everyone!

Have you had an opportunity to enjoy the Christmas lights during this holiday season?  I was thinking today how we never go look at the lights during the daytime.  Why?  Because the lights are at their best and most spectacular in the dark of night.

As we come to the close of 2015, we have had many reminders that our world is a dark place, and getting darker.  Our Savior was born in a world like ours, dark and hopeless.  He came to be, and give, Light and Hope.  He showed us the love of the Father as He lived, served and loved others with deep compassion, full of grace and truth.  As we celebrate His birth as well as His life, may we live, serve, and share His love with with grace and truth to those God places in our paths–and be lights shining in our dark world.

See you in 2016!  Blessings from Debby and Retreat-in-a-Bag

Tender Mercies

sharing-my-heart-with-youYou may have noticed that my efforts to put out a weekly blog have fallen part in the last few months.  Today, I’m going to take a little extra time to share my heart with you, my faithful readers, so please be patient with this longer-than-normal blog.

In February of this year, we lost our precious and irreplaceable pastor’s wife, Denise, who also was the heart and leader of the women’s ministry at our church.  I, along with our women’s leadership team and so many others, have lost not only our leader and teacher, but an intercessor, prayer partner, mentor, friend and confidant.  She is pictured and mentioned in the “about” section of the Retreat-in-a-Bag website, and was a huge supporter of our efforts to share what we have learned over the years of women’s ministry.

I have been called upon to step up and lead the women’s ministry, something that was never on my radar.  While I hope that none of you ever go through a transition like this in your ministries, I want to share from my heart the tender ways that God has been ministering to us.  Our loss was devastating, and all of our women’s leaders are still grieving; it would have been easy just to let things slide for a little while.  Yet God has us moving “onward” despite the great hole left in our hearts.

May I share with you a few of God’s tender mercies to us during this time?

  • Back in February, our women’s Bible study was finished our verse by verse study in the book of Habakkuk.  Habakkuk had seen the coming devastation of his people and had remembered His past deliverance.  He recognized that great loss was inevitable in his future.  Do you remember how Habakkuk finishes his message?  He declares that no matter what loss he faces, he will choose to rejoice in the Lord.  He will move forward in faith and in God’s strength, not stuck in the valley but with deer’s feet on the high hills.  These verses were a sweet and timely comfort and encouragement from the Lord to our ladies.
  • Another mercy was His drawing together our leadership team in an even closer bond of love and support.  When we gathered together, I looked around at a group of women who each had faced their own set of either health crises or difficult circumstances in the past year, and yet we drew together as one in our commitment to continue Denise’s loving legacy to our women’s ministry.  That unity and support for one another was a tender mercy at a time when no doubt all of us felt that we had lost the wind beneath our sails.
  • Back in February, we were also just beginning to plan for our annual fall women’s retreat.  We had the retreat center reserved, but were in the process of praying about the speaker and theme.  Out of the blue, we were given the sweet gift of a retreat theme, special speaker and worship leader being more or less “dropped” in our laps without effort on our part.  As I think about this upcoming retreat “Deeper Still”, I have no doubt that this is God’s gift to our women during this difficult year–that in our sorrow, He is calling us to a deeper walk with Him.
  • As I have been praying for direction for the women’s ministry studies and events for the remainder of this year, my quiet time has taken me through the Psalms and Proverbs.  God spoke to my heart through an unexpected proverb–Proverbs 14:4, which says “Where no oxen are, the trough is clean; but much increase comes by the strength of an ox.”  The NLT records it like this: “Without an ox, the stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest.” In other words, if you don’t have an ox–sure, life will be easier in some ways; you won’t have to clean the stable and you’ll avoid the inconveniences and cost of caring for the needs of an ox.  But weigh that against the advantage of having an ox that will bring much increase in the long run.  What is God saying?  In His tender way, I believe He is saying–Yes, you can keep your calendar clear and not schedule anything extra for your ladies.  But consider the benefits and blessings-yes, even the harvest– you may be missing

Thanks for letting me share today.  My testimony is that our God is faithful.  He cares for you, and He cares for your ministry.  Are you or your ministry going through a dark valley?  He wants to minister to you in your dark hours.  Look for those sparkling gems of God’s tender mercies!

Burdens? What Burdens?

gal6-2What burdens you? We have family cares and worries, jobs, health issues, heavy responsibilities, even bad habits and besetting sin that weigh us down.  One of the interesting things about the Christian life is what the Bible has to say about burdens.  We are to cast all of our burdens on Him, because He cares for us (I Peter 5:7).  If we are heavy-laden, Jesus tells us to come to Him and we’ll find rest because His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30). He wants to carry our load for us.  We are told not to worry, but to pray, and He will give us peace (Philippians 4:6-7).  And of course, Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us that we are to lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us so that we can run the race, unencumbered.  Sounds like God wants us free of any burdens that could overwhelm us and slow our progress.

Oops!  Not all burdens!  There is a burden we are to carry.  Galatians 6:1-2 reminds us of our responsibility toward others, to remind and restore those who do carry burdens.  And then?  “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” As Christian women, and in ministry, we need to be obedient in giving Him our burdens  so we are able to help our sisters with their burdens.

Giving Up on Resolutions

February 2015.   So…how are you doing on your New Year’s resolutions?

Composite image of this year i am going toI have always been a resolution maker…and a resolution breaker.  The word “resolution” comes from the word “resolve” which actually has something to do with finding a solution and solving a problem by deciding on a new course of action.  I want to make a resolution to solve the problems of ME… and we know THAT isn’t something that I can actually accomplish, certainly not by will power, nor permanently!

So, I moved on to “prayer goals” which are a lot like resolutions except that we bring these to God asking Him to accomplish these desires in our life.  Definitely a step in the right direction–realizing that I can’t solve the problem of ME in my own strength.

I’ve had decades to be convinced that I can’t accomplish transformation by my own mental fortitude and determination.  So maybe it is time to die–in the Biblical way.  Die to ME, die to my efforts to “self-help” and DIY.

Here is what A.W. Tozer (The Crucified Life) said:  “The crucified life is a life absolutely committed to following after Christ Jesus.  To be more like Him. To think like Him.  To act like Him.  To love like Him.  The whole essence of spiritual perfection has everything to do with Jesus Christ.  Not with rules and regulations.  Not with how we dress or what we do or do not do.  We are not to look like each other; rather, we are to look like Christ.”

Important for all of us, leaders or not!
